Lake Bullen Merri

The Lake Bullen Merri Boat Ramp is getting an upgrade thanks to the State Government’s unprecedented investment in boating in Victoria.

Lake Bullen Merri, located near Camperdown in Corangamite Shire is a popular fishing location with a variety of trout on offer, and is one of two locations in Victoria stocked with Chinook salmon by the Victorian Fisheries Authority.

Better Boating Victoria is overseeing the government’s boating commitments and is working closely with Corangamite Shire Council, Lake Bullen Merri South Beach Committee of Management , Camperdown Angling Club and Parks Victoria on upgrades which will improve functionality, safety and reduce impacts of ongoing sedimentation for boaters.

Project update – June 7

Construction is continuing on boat ramp upgrades at Lake Bullen Merri and crews are making it easier to get out on the water at the iconic south-west crater lake.

Underwater retaining walls have been installed and the site is almost ready for its new concrete boat ramp to be laid down.

Excavation has taken place below the waterline and rock has been used to form the solid sub-base for the new concrete boat ramp.

Coming days will see the pre-cast concrete panels laid down below the waterline to form the new boat ramp, which will be a big improvement on the old surface.

Once the boat ramp is in place, work will begin on a new turning circle and access from the top of the ramp.

The upgrade plans include a new centrally-located pontoon to make it easier to tie up and access your boat, new concrete ramps and an underwater retaining wall to minimise future impacts of sedimentation.

Construction’s expected to be complete mid-year and the ramp will be closed while crews are on site. For fishers keen to wet a line in the south-west, Lake Purrumbete’s a short drive away and is also stocked with Chinook salmon and a wide variety of trout.

For details of nearby boat ramps, download the Boating Vic app or use their online ramp map.

The project is being funded through Victorian Government’s commitment to return boating licence and rego fees back into projects and programs through the Better Boating Fund.

Construction works began in early March and are and anticipated to be completed in June. The boat ramp will be closed to the public during construction. Works will be managed by Corangamite Shire Council in conjunction with South Beach Foreshore Committee of Management and delivered by Bridgewater Marine. Funding will be provided in full by Better Boating Victoria.

The boat ramp upgrade will include the complete replacement of the existing boat ramp and installation of a central floating pontoon. On-land works including construction of a turning circle and re-surfacing of the access ramp will improve the functionality for ramp users.

The design works to marine side infrastructure was prepared by engineering firm BMT and is based on studies of sedimentation and wave action impact on the boat ramp. To reduce disruption to boat ramp users and minimise maintenance costs, two retaining walls will be constructed to reduce the build-up of sediment on the ramp.
