Geelong to receive more boating facility upgrades

Boaters can now have their say on plans for future upgrades at two popular Corio Bay boat ramps as part of an investment by the Victorian Government into improving recreational boating.

Better Boating Victoria (BBV) has commissioned concept designs for upgrades to the ramps at Limeburners Point in East Geelong and Avalon Beach to make it easier for boaters to get out on the water.

BBV has already made it free to park and launch at Victorian boat ramps and is currently undertaking the most significant boat ramp construction program in the state’s history, including improvements at Queenscliff and Point Richards on the nearby Bellarine Peninsula.

One of the busiest ramps in the Geelong region, Limeburners Point currently has three lanes and 49 parks to accommodate a car and trailer. Among the potential improvements outlined in the concept design is an increase of 66 parking spaces through formalising the existing overflow parking area.

The design also includes improvements to the facility’s launching and berthing capacity through two new boat ramp lanes, relocating and realigning existing pontoons, and providing an additional floating pontoon.

Further recommendations include moving the ramp’s fish cleaning tables closer to the foreshore and rebuilding and extending the offshore breakwall to provide greater protection for the harbour.

At Avalon Beach, parking capacity will almost triple with the proposed addition of 36 car and trailer spaces, an extension to jetties to increase capacity, new fishing cleaning tables, and the replacement of wave screens along the jetties to provide greater protection for boaters.

Plan development for both ramps was made in consultation with asset managers, user groups, and community members.
